Hardscape & Paver Driveways in BC
Interlocking paver driveways and walkways — premium curb appeal, lasting durability, and design flexibility that asphalt can't match.
What Is Hardscape Paving?
Hardscape paving — also called interlocking concrete pavers or simply "pavers" — is a driveway and walkway surface made from individual concrete or stone units installed over a compacted granular base. Unlike asphalt (a monolithic surface) or poured concrete, pavers are individual units that interlock and flex as a system.
JacobElis Pavement works with four leading paver manufacturers: Basalite, a BC-based manufacturer known for quality concrete pavers and excellent local availability; Barkman, a Canadian manufacturer with an extensive range of styles, colours, and textures popular for residential driveways; Belgard, a premium North American brand offering architectural styles and high-end design options; and Enmon, which offers modern architectural paver systems with clean, contemporary lines.
Pavers are popular for driveways and walkways for several reasons. The design options are far greater than asphalt — dozens of colours, textures, patterns, and profiles are available. Individual units can be lifted and replaced if damaged, stained, or if you need to access underground utilities — a significant advantage over asphalt or concrete. And pavers handle BC's freeze-thaw cycles well: the flexible joints between units allow for thermal movement without cracking.
A properly installed paver driveway has a lifespan of 30–50 years — longer than asphalt (20–30 years) and comparable to concrete, but with far greater repairability. The base preparation is critical: we install the same compacted granular base we use for asphalt paving, ensuring long-term stability and drainage.
The upfront cost of pavers is higher than asphalt — typically 2–3x — but the longer lifespan, elimination of sealcoating costs, and the ability to repair individual units rather than patching or resurfacing make pavers a strong long-term investment, particularly for homeowners who value curb appeal and design.
