Asphalt Driveway Paving in BC

Asphalt driveway paving is the process of installing a new durable asphalt surface on your property — from the ground up. It's not just laying a layer of blacktop. A properly paved driveway involves careful site preparation, engineered base construction, and precision asphalt application that together create a surface capable of lasting two to three decades.

The full process begins with excavation — removing existing material and digging down to the correct depth based on your soil type and drainage conditions. In BC's Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, soil conditions vary significantly between municipalities, and the excavation depth must account for this. After excavation, a granular base layer of crushed gravel is installed and compacted in lifts. This base is the foundation of your driveway, and it is the single most important factor in how long your driveway will last.

Once the base is compacted and graded for proper drainage, hot-mix asphalt is delivered and laid using a paving machine. The asphalt is spread to the correct thickness — typically 2 to 3 inches for residential driveways — and then compacted using a heavy roller. Compaction is critical: it removes air voids from the mix, increases density, and creates the smooth, tight surface that resists water infiltration and wear.

BC's climate presents specific challenges for asphalt driveways. The Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley experience significant freeze-thaw cycling through the winter months — temperatures drop below freezing at night and rise above it during the day. Water that infiltrates a poorly constructed driveway freezes, expands, and causes cracking and heaving. A properly built driveway with a well-drained base resists this cycle effectively.

With proper installation and routine sealcoating every 3–5 years, an asphalt driveway in BC will typically last 20–30 years. Asphalt remains the most popular driveway material in BC because it balances cost, durability, and ease of repair better than any alternative. Concrete costs more upfront and cracks more easily in freeze-thaw conditions. Interlocking pavers are expensive and require ongoing maintenance. Asphalt offers the best long-term value for most homeowners.
